About the Website

I put this website together as a showcase for my photography. The initial reasoning behind it was simply I needed a place to put my photos where space wouldn’t be a limitation. My own computer seemed ideal for it, but if I was going to host my own files I’d need to create a website.

After toying with the idea of simply hosting the files here and giving it a very base look (ie: click filename, see picture) I decided to go full guns. Domain name was registered at a very reasonable price from Domains@Cost.ca, and DNS pointing is being handled for free at ZoneEdit.com.

Initially the site was designed in Frontpage 2002, and run from a Win32 port of Apache. After numerous upgrades to both my skills and my equipment, I’ve wound up running Free BSD for the past 2 years with great success. It has been far more stable, far better performing and far more secure than anything I was able to do with a Windows based setup. It’s also been a lot of fun.

The site is currently running on a Pentium III 800Mhz system with 256MB of RAM, running on FreeBSD 6.1, Apache 2.2.2, PHP 5.1.4 and MySQL 5.0.22. I use Gallery2 to dynamically serve up all of the pictures, and Wordpress as my blogging application.
